Staring
each other down proved to be the only entertainment they could find that day. Surrounded
by white walls with pictures of their past and the laughter they used to share,
sitting on a plaid red sofa that had the torn fabric from previous owners. The
way the circumstances played out that day both of them were wrong but neither
of them would ever admit to being the guilty party. Teresa slowly stood and
walked around the wooden coffee table to look out the window. She laughed at
the ticket being written to the green Buick in the parking lot that didn’t have
a parking permit, and saw the puddles on the baseball field across the street
and thought of the impending summer vacation. Teresa didn’t want to leave in
two weeks with this still standing between them. Turning to face her roommate
and her best friend she was dreading the words that were about to be said.
“So.” Teresa said. “How are we going to proceed?” Andrea
looked up from her computer screen that she had picked up from the coffee table.
Teresa was hoping for a respond, but knew she wouldn’t get one from her friend
sitting on the sofa. “Listen I didn’t know that you liked him before I started
dating him. I know you think I betrayed you, I didn’t know you wanted him for
yourself.” Andrea could only stare at Teresa, not believing what she was
hearing.
“I want him back. You have to give him back!” Andrea said.
She stood and walked up in front of Teresa. “You will give him back to me.”
Andrea lifted her finger and pointed at the door. “You will go right now, and
tell him you don’t want him anymore. Make him realize he wants me instead.”
Teresa lifted her chin at the demand. Walking toward the door Andrea was still
pointing at, when she reached out and touched the cold metal handle attached to
the door she realized she could never give him up. Teresa turned back to her
roommate and just smiled, hoping that someday she would forgive her.
